my fic, my warnings policy.
So warnings on fic have been a big issue lately, and I thought it best to define my personal policy regarding warnings on my fic a little. I think warnings are useful and courteous. I try to provide them. Sometimes I may forget to warn for something, because I lack perfection in the execution of my fanfic writing and presentation. I lack perfection partly because I'm human and humans aren't perfect, and partly because fandom is just a goddamn hobby. If you want a consistent product then maybe expecting it to be produced by unpaid volunteers is a bit much. Just like with a spelling error, I will usually correct the lack of a warning if asked, but I won't beat myself up over the mistake. Sometimes I warn very specifically for things that may be triggers or distressing. Sometimes I warn in more general terms... for example "Self harm" may cover cutting, or drug use, or eating disordered behavior. Which of these two approaches I choose will depend on what introduction I feel is best for that particular fic. If I have given a general warning, and it could possibly cover something that triggers you, then I'm OK with being contacted to be asked to give more specific info. Same with if you are triggered by something unusual. If you really need to know whether there are any toucans or purple mohair sweaters in the story, I will endeavor to provide you with the info you need. | | Monday, June 29th, 2009 | | 11:19 am |

Sore throat. Have started The Fatal Shore.
Well looks like Victoria's flu cases are keeping the WHO on the verge of declaring a state of pandemic... not surprising since this is the middle of our ordinary flu season, and Victoria's June weather is a cold wet rainy pit of winter despair as per usual. I'm wondering whether to go get antibiotics now to clear up a bit of throat gunge I've been experiencing for about a week. I'd usually wait this stuff out unless it gets bad, but maybe if I leave it a few weeks and both it and the public health situation gets worse when all those Victorians start infecting the rest of us, I'll get caught up in all the fuss and paranoia and might be in-home quarantined. It doesn't seem like a great time to have a relatively ordinary URTI, right? I read the first fifty pages or so of The Fatal Shore. I'm seriously considering writing up chapter by chapter summaries and reviews. The only thing stopping me is I'm not sure anyone would really give a damn about reading said summaries and reviews. Maybe I should start looking for history focused communities on LJ. | | Thursday, June 4th, 2009 | | 12:02 am |

Government House Open Day.
Today Government House had an open day, and we took the kids. The dining table set for a formal dinner was not in the least bit impressive, given similar resources I think almost anyone could do better. All the pictures of kings and queens were impressive. There must have been quite a production line making those things so that every colony's Governor could have their own 7 foot tall King George the Whatevereth. The people wandering about the place in Victorian era dress were... just sort of there. It rained while we were waiting in line. We never did get shown exactly where the police chief in 1862 was murdered. All in all not a bad day. The best bit of it was that while we were waiting in line we sent the girls running off to look at features in the garden and then report back on them to us. They quite exhausted themselves. | | Thursday, May 28th, 2009 | | 9:10 pm |
Liberal Party giving me the shits.
Apparently the opposition are whining because some tiny (relatively speaking) amount of the billions spent on the stimulus package went to people who qualified, then had the temerity to die before the payment could be delivered. This does rather tend to happen a bit when you are making payments to age pensioners. I can't see what the point in griping about this is. They were qualified, entitled, the money was damn well theirs and they, for the most part, were expecting it. Just like all the tax refunds that are paid to the estates of dead people every year. If I die and anyone tries to diddle my estate out of money that was mine, if at all possible I'm going to come back and haunt them. | | Friday, May 8th, 2009 | | 6:16 pm |
Perfect balance of stupidity and the consequences of stupidity.
Damir Dokic (a dual Serbian/Australian citizen, father of a tennis star, and notorious loudmouthed jerk) throws a hissy fit about a news story in the Australian press. Damir Dokic runs his big fat mouth to reporters, threatens to use rocket launcher to attack Australian ambassador in Belgrade. Damir Dokic's house searched by Serbian police as a result of these threats. Damir Dokic arrested by Serbian police after weapons found in his house. Australian foreign minister tells Australian media that as an Australian citizen, Damir Dokic can access consular assistance if he wishes. Damir Dokic claims it was all a joke. All of Australia sniggers at Damir Dokic. http://www.theaustralian.news.com.au/story/0,25197,25447003-2702,00.htmlhttp://www.theaustralian.news.com.au/story/0,25197,25448316-601,00.html | | Thursday, April 30th, 2009 | | 11:25 am |

I've always said, Windypoint does not write slash.
Not my thing, you know? But any writer will find their muse making a liar of them eventually Hence I give you a not particularly titillating and yet still quite NC17 Harry/Goyle slash ficlet of the cracky sort. Title: Gregory Goyle's Hobby Author: Windypoint Pairing: Harry Potter/Gregory Goyle Rating: NC17 Genre: Crackfic ( Read more ) | | Friday, April 24th, 2009 | | 4:21 am |
CIA memos released by President Barack Obama's administration last week revealed that Zubaydah was waterboarded at least 83 times and self-confessed 9/11 mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammad 183 times.http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/8013759.stmLike much of the rest of the world, I'm wondering how there could be a sensible explanation for waterboarding a prisoner 183 times. | | 1:36 am |

I agree with this news story so much. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/nature/7998169.stm Neil Turok, chair of mathematical physics at Cambridge University, says governments are following the wrong policy when it comes to African aid.
Focusing on basic healthcare and primary education is stopping Africa developing, Professor Turok suggests.
The founder of the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS) says investment in higher education is key. Follow the link to read more. It wasn't poets, musicians, theologians and social thinkers that really gave Europe what it took to gain ascendancy in world affairs. It was engineers, scientists, economic thinkers, financial thinkers that made it all happen... that organized the capital and developed the technologies. Primary education is important because every nation needs to have a pool of labor ready workers able to function in most base grade jobs, many of which require basic maths and writing skills... it is also important to provide a talented pool from which people are drawn for further education. Arts and humanities tertiary education is important so that wealth, once it exists and is organized, can be turned into cultural complexity and sturdiness. But having plenty of one's own scientists and employment opportunities for them is what really makes the difference between having nature and international economics kick your arse or kiss your arse. I think, maybe, in many ways the situation has been worsened by most of those who care about social issues and therefore end up being in the majority of those who are working to assist Africa also being people who have had little science education. | | Saturday, April 18th, 2009 | | 11:57 am |

It is raining! RAINING
4.6 mm of rain since 9 am. We have wet streets, roads, gardens. The city smells like warm wet asphalt that hasn't been washed down for ages. I had to remind the kids to wear appropriate shoes to school, because they had forgotten what rain means to footwear. | | 1:04 am |
